5 Warning Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning

A blocked dryer vent is one of the more overlooked fire risks in a home — here's what to watch for.

Lint buildup inside a dryer vent restricts airflow, and restricted airflow means heat and moisture that should be venting outside instead stay trapped in the line — and in your laundry room. It's one of the most common, least-thought-about maintenance items in a house. Here are the signs it's time to get it cleared out.

1. Clothes Take Longer To Dry

If a load that used to take one cycle now regularly needs two, that's usually the first and clearest sign. Reduced airflow means the dryer can't push moist air out efficiently, so it just keeps running.

2. The Dryer Or Laundry Room Feels Hot

A dryer that's noticeably hotter to the touch than usual, or a laundry room that gets uncomfortably warm and humid during a cycle, points to heat that isn't escaping through the vent the way it should.

3. A Burning Smell

Any burning smell during a drying cycle should be taken seriously. Lint is highly flammable, and a restricted vent traps heat exactly where lint accumulates. This is the sign to stop using the dryer and get it inspected, not the one to wait on.

4. Lint Around The Outside Vent Opening

Walk outside and check the exterior vent cover while the dryer is running. You should feel a strong, steady airflow. If it's weak, or you notice lint collecting around the outside opening itself, that's a sign the line is clogged somewhere along its length.

5. It's Been More Than A Year

Even without obvious symptoms, a dryer vent that hasn't been cleaned in a year or more is worth checking — especially for longer vent runs, homes with multiple daily loads, or vents with several bends (each bend is a spot where lint tends to collect).

Why It's Worth Taking Seriously

Beyond the fire risk, a restricted vent makes your dryer work harder and use more energy for the same result, and that extra heat and strain shortens the appliance's lifespan. A vent cleaning is a small job that addresses a safety issue and a cost issue at the same time.
