Indoor Air Quality 101: What's Really Living In Your Ducts

Dust is the least of it. Here's what actually accumulates inside a duct system that's gone a few years without cleaning.

The EPA has long noted that indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air — and for most homes, the duct system is the reason it keeps circulating. Every time your HVAC kicks on, whatever is sitting inside those ducts gets pushed through every room in the house.

What Actually Builds Up In There

It's not just dust. Over months and years, a typical duct system accumulates a mix of:

  • Dust and fine debris. The baseline — and the part most people picture when they think about duct cleaning.
  • Pet dander and hair. Even in homes without pets allowed in certain rooms, dander travels through the whole system.
  • Pollen. Pulled in from outside air and from anyone who's been outdoors recently, then recirculated long after allergy season ends.
  • Mold spores. Ducts hold moisture more than people expect, especially around the AC coil — a common starting point for mold growth.
  • Occasionally, pests. Rodent or insect debris isn't rare in older duct systems, particularly in homes with attic or crawlspace ductwork.

Why It Keeps Coming Back

A duct system is a closed loop. Air gets pulled in through the returns, pushed back out through the supply vents, and repeats dozens of times a day. Anything sitting inside that loop doesn't just stay put — it gets redistributed through every room the system serves, every single cycle.

Who Feels It Most

Everyone breathes it, but some people notice it more directly: allergy and asthma sufferers, infants, older adults, and anyone with a compromised respiratory system. A house that "just feels dusty no matter how often you clean" is a common symptom — the dust is being replenished faster than you can keep up with it.

What A Professional Cleaning Actually Changes

A proper air duct cleaning doesn't just vacuum out the visible dust near the vents — it clears the full length of the system, including the areas you can't see or reach yourself. The result is air that's measurably cleaner right after service, not just a vent cover that looks tidier.

How To Tell If It's Time

If it's been over a year, if anyone in the home has unexplained allergy symptoms that improve when they're away from the house, or if you can see dust buildup right at the vent covers, those are all reasonable signals to get the system inspected.
